Could I have drawn this out any longer?

Here is a 10 day update, as usual sorry for the wait.

New Releases 19th November 2012

This week's UK Top 40 was revealed yesterday and the top 3 are all new releases, so it looks unlikely that a high climber is going to pinch the crown any time soon. And since One Direction are currently number one, we are in desperate need of some big contenders to knock them off the top (Please Do). This week's new releases may just hold the answer, despite being a mixed bag not only in terms of taste, but genres as well.

First up, we have Girl on Fire by Alicia Keys, a mid-tempo hip-hop/R&B track which debuted at the VMAs and has had a brilliant reception since, with plenty of airplays and a few of my fellow DJs have started humming it (quite embarrassingly in some cases). It's been released in almost every country except the UK. The only fear with this one is that its been played so much people may be starting to get sick of it... but when has that stopped people before? The single is on an EP with an Inferno remix; a slightly jumpier version with hip-hop artist Nicki Minaj providing 2 extra verses; and the Bluelight mix, which has a much softer feel to it, with vocals that are allowed to stray wildly from the script, less of a punchy beat and a more soulful tone to it. This track is probably going to add to the list of "Alicia's power ballads" which always have done well in the charts, I would not be at all surprised to see this at number 1 next week.

Next, Don't Judge Me by Chris Brown, is currently at number 42 in the chart, but considering it only came out on Sunday morning, that's pretty good going. The track is not what you'd normally expect from Chris Brown, some speculate that it may even be an apology to Rihanna. It's received a critical reception, with some saying it's a tender, heartfelt "Take me as I am" ballad that wrenches your heart from its strings; whilst others see it as a weak and wincing twitter rant with the words of someone who still doesn't quite grasp the extent of what he has done in the past. To be honest, I feel its a song that doesn't have you running to the shops to buy it (unless you're a fangirl/boy in which case why are you reading this?) but is the kind of thing you have to be in the mood for, and I don't see it as reaching the top 10 this week.

Remember Me by Daley featuring Jesse J, and is his debut single. Daley has previously appeared on Gorillaz album Plastic Beach alongside Damon Albarn. The track is light electro with pop elements rooted deep in soul. Reminiscent of early Winehouse, it clearly shows off Daley's strong soulful vocals. Jesse J provides the chorus, backing vocals and stunning harmonies. In my personal view this is a brilliant track to start off what I hope is going to be a long and prosperous career for Daley. This is 100% my belter of the week.

Something New is Girls Aloud's new single. Which has a contemporary new sound, as well a Minaj-esque rap section and a shouty distorted distorted tone similar to that of Beyonce's Run The World (Girls) ; although somehow they still manage to sound like Girls Aloud's previous poppy songs. It's also this year's Children in Need track, that's the issue I have with it. It sounds in no way like a charity single, so it kind of feels like "Yes, this is all about the children and absolutely nothing to do with us re-forming and promoting a surprise world tour in 3 months *nudge nudge wink wink* and I personally think that our charity single is better, but I might be slightly biased. Although, to give credit to Cheryl Cole, she has done a lot for charity, so maybe she deserves it. As much as it saddens me to say this, I think this probably going to be number one next week, just because its a Children in Need single and not because of whatever musical quality it has.

Party's Over Here by Mike Delinquent Project ft Donae'o, MZ Bratt and Kcat. Not a contender for number one, but a brilliant garage track with a heavy bassline with grime and dance undertones. Easy to mix in and out of and perfect for that mid-way point in a club night, when people are not drunk enough to go crazy but tired enough to almost fall asleep. This track will probably be played in a club near you very soon, a DJ's dream.

Olly Murs' new track Troublemaker featuring Flo Rida is the lead single from his new album Right Place, Right Time. Flo Rida provides the intro and the rap bridge for the track whilst Olly performs his usual unique blend of about 13 different genres. This is going down the same route as Heart Skips A Beat and likely do just as well, despite Olly and Flo never having actually met in person.

Finally, but by no means leastly we have Not Giving In from the people who brought you the summer smash hit Feel The Love and that bloke who did the song from the Internet Explorer ad Too Close. Rudimental yet again provides his fresh mixture of jazz, club, dance and almost everything including saxophones; but with a much slower intro than last time, providing an awe-inspiring set-up for John Newman to give his vocal talent to lead up to one of the best drops of the century. But they don't just leave it there, Alex Clare provides strong vocals to what is essentially going to become the non-christmassy feelgood track of the winter. This definitely won't take the top spot this week, but will probably climb its way up the chart in later weeks.

There's quite a few more new releases this week, but I consider these the ones to watch.

Your Vlogger Needs YOU - Tech Show and SoundClash

Every good man needs a good team behind him, now I'm not a good man .... so erm yeah, I don't have a team really ... its just me doing these supposedly silly little video diaries (according to the hatemail I receive anyway... not that I listen to it, I just like to laugh at it). But as LSRfm prepares for a brand new season of programmes, I realised I need help, in particular your help. I'm helping to run several programmes this year, here's my plea for help for 2 of them (and one of them isn't even confirmed yet).

And So it Begins....

Unfortunately, due to illness, livestream prep and the after effects of mixing a 2 hour livestream with vodka, tequila and freshers' flu (mainly me losing my voice). I haven't been able to keep to schedule. So, as is almost tradition (by now, considering the amount of times its happened) in these circumstances, I thought I'd bring you up to speed on what I've been up to, and what to expect over the next couple of weeks.

One Year Down ....

The anniversary livestream on 15th September saw the end of the first year of video diaries. Along the way we've had our difficulties, our highs and lows. But to be honest, its been an awesome first year (rambling aside). Unfortunately ustream didn't record properly, so the only remaining evidence of the livestream is the opening VT .... here it is

Me being arrogant and why I should be proclaimed the best male student radio presenter in Britain (a.k.a. my Best Male SRA entry)

So I’m going to be honest with you, at the start of the year I would never have considered going for this award. It was my first time on live radio and I started out with a 15 minute feature on Hometime, and not being a natural presenter I was fumbling words, creating long pauses and even hyperventilating, so much so that one of the comments I received over twitter straight after my debut mentioned me “sounding like a chased rapist being interrogated”… not exactly Best Male material. But following several weeks of staying in the studio for the entire show, being sold off for Children in Need and practicing in front of my webcam every day; I found confidence from somewhere, probably down the back of the sofa. Due to this newfound confidence, I applied for my own show in second semester and was given an hour, 8am Fridays. This timeslot hadn’t existed previously so I took it upon myself to advertise the new show in the most inventive way possible; by holding a vote for the name of the new show through social media, YouTube and mentioning it on the station’s flagship programmes. The show was baptised “The Wake-Up Call” and promised to bring the early risers amongst us something to listen to, to get them “up, out of bed and ready for the day ahead”, which, after listener suggestion, became the show’s strapline. Throughout the show’s downtime, I used YouTube as a testing ground for ideas and to gauge listener response and let people know what was going on with the show, from this evolved the show’s 2 main features; ShowerTrack, a part of the show where we play a karaoke classic that one of our listeners admits to singing in the shower in a desperate attempt to get everybody out of that Friday morning mood and ready for the weekend; and Not News, a fake news show which evolved from an idea for an April Fools’ Day prank. I also created a secondary incentive for listeners to tune in to the show, or to catch-up using the podcasts, if an eclectic mix of feel good tunes wasn’t enough; I held an on-going promise to my listeners that I would never repeat a track over the course of the entire series of shows because I thought that there was enough good music out there to keep the show going, failure to uphold this promise would have resulted in me losing £50 to the first listener to get in touch and point out the error of my ways. The series culminated in a 3 hour long breakfast takeover, and as guests were somewhat of a commodity that early in the morning, I took it upon myself to create a co-presenter that would take every opportunity to insult me and invented a pair of guests, which allowed me to produce a show where my voice wasn’t the only one playing through the airwaves and to speculate some rather awkward scenarios. Enough about the show though, let’s be arrogant for a second and talk about me. I didn’t get into student radio because I wanted to move into a career, or be famous or anything like that. I just have a passion for entertaining people whether it’s through using my personality or by making a fool of myself, I have always given my newly established listener base something to listen to; even in the unfortunate circumstance when I’m unable to make it to the studio, I will always have something prepared. That’s why I think I should be best male.

Year 1 at LSRfm.com

So, where do I begin? My name’s Dave Tipping (or Disco or Tipster or “that bloke with the weird haircut who’s always in the office” to some of my fellow presenters) and this is my first year doing live radio.
My experience of radio this year has been varied to say the least, from presenting a frankly unoriginal feature in the first semester (in the form of tedious link) to appearing on and hosting panel shows (Hidden Broadcast), reporting on the latest gadgets (The Tech Show) and having my own early morning slot (The Wake-up Call); as well as taking my aforementioned feature and putting a twist on it that made it unique in its own right by adding a personal touch and an element of randomness to the original formula.

Admittedly, I wasn’t that involved in 2011, I presented a feature on Tuesday’s Hometime show and the occasional pre-recorded report for the tech show; this was mainly due to my lack of experience which thus caused a lack of confidence. However, I was enthusiastic to get more involved, so I stayed in the studio after my feature most weeks to watch some of the more experienced presenters and build my confidence. It was then, in November, when I decided to step up to the plate for the first time. LSRfm.com was doing 24 OB’s in 24 hours, and I suggested that the time switching from one location to another could be made more exciting by offering an ongoing competition that we could update in the breaks, the only problem was finding something to give away. Unfortunately, someone came up with the ridiculous idea that I should be the prize (I was more cute back then, I promise) and it caught on. So, yes, I took part in what could be considered a lighter version of prostitution... ... ... and?  Luckily, this gave me the boost I needed to become more involved and resulted in me appearing on LSR We Clever (a topical news quiz) and the Hidden Broadcast (a not-so topical panel show) on top of producing a podcast for the feature I had been doing and occasionally helping the late night shows with any minor technical difficulties that occurred.

Coming back after Christmas, I felt ready to take on whatever challenge was thrown at me. I became more involved in the Hidden Broadcast, by both hosting and helping with the production and design. I continued with my feature, but with a bit of extra flavour and was given my own show in February, which I used to be experimental in show style; resulting in the evolution of a couple of features and a group of people who were willing to wake up at 8am to listen to me. However, with a lack of guests and a co-presenter, the studio felt lonely and monotone; so I “built” and “made up” my own with the use of a voice changer and some sticky-back plastic.

The year culminated in me applying for Programme Controller in an attempt to bring my enthusiasm to the entire station. Unfortunately, I failed.... oh well, always a lot more going on and another year.
