Every good man needs a good team behind him, now I'm not a good man .... so erm yeah, I don't have a team really ... its just me doing these supposedly silly little video diaries (according to the hatemail I receive anyway... not that I listen to it, I just like to laugh at it). But as LSRfm prepares for a brand new season of programmes, I realised I need help, in particular your help. I'm helping to run several programmes this year, here's my plea for help for 2 of them (and one of them isn't even confirmed yet).

And So it Begins....

Unfortunately, due to illness, livestream prep and the after effects of mixing a 2 hour livestream with vodka, tequila and freshers' flu (mainly me losing my voice). I haven't been able to keep to schedule. So, as is almost tradition (by now, considering the amount of times its happened) in these circumstances, I thought I'd bring you up to speed on what I've been up to, and what to expect over the next couple of weeks.

One Year Down ....

The anniversary livestream on 15th September saw the end of the first year of video diaries. Along the way we've had our difficulties, our highs and lows. But to be honest, its been an awesome first year (rambling aside). Unfortunately ustream didn't record properly, so the only remaining evidence of the livestream is the opening VT .... here it is

Me being arrogant and why I should be proclaimed the best male student radio presenter in Britain (a.k.a. my Best Male SRA entry)

So I’m going to be honest with you, at the start of the year I would never have considered going for this award. It was my first time on live radio and I started out with a 15 minute feature on Hometime, and not being a natural presenter I was fumbling words, creating long pauses and even hyperventilating, so much so that one of the comments I received over twitter straight after my debut mentioned me “sounding like a chased rapist being interrogated”… not exactly Best Male material. But following several weeks of staying in the studio for the entire show, being sold off for Children in Need and practicing in front of my webcam every day; I found confidence from somewhere, probably down the back of the sofa. Due to this newfound confidence, I applied for my own show in second semester and was given an hour, 8am Fridays. This timeslot hadn’t existed previously so I took it upon myself to advertise the new show in the most inventive way possible; by holding a vote for the name of the new show through social media, YouTube and mentioning it on the station’s flagship programmes. The show was baptised “The Wake-Up Call” and promised to bring the early risers amongst us something to listen to, to get them “up, out of bed and ready for the day ahead”, which, after listener suggestion, became the show’s strapline. Throughout the show’s downtime, I used YouTube as a testing ground for ideas and to gauge listener response and let people know what was going on with the show, from this evolved the show’s 2 main features; ShowerTrack, a part of the show where we play a karaoke classic that one of our listeners admits to singing in the shower in a desperate attempt to get everybody out of that Friday morning mood and ready for the weekend; and Not News, a fake news show which evolved from an idea for an April Fools’ Day prank. I also created a secondary incentive for listeners to tune in to the show, or to catch-up using the podcasts, if an eclectic mix of feel good tunes wasn’t enough; I held an on-going promise to my listeners that I would never repeat a track over the course of the entire series of shows because I thought that there was enough good music out there to keep the show going, failure to uphold this promise would have resulted in me losing £50 to the first listener to get in touch and point out the error of my ways. The series culminated in a 3 hour long breakfast takeover, and as guests were somewhat of a commodity that early in the morning, I took it upon myself to create a co-presenter that would take every opportunity to insult me and invented a pair of guests, which allowed me to produce a show where my voice wasn’t the only one playing through the airwaves and to speculate some rather awkward scenarios. Enough about the show though, let’s be arrogant for a second and talk about me. I didn’t get into student radio because I wanted to move into a career, or be famous or anything like that. I just have a passion for entertaining people whether it’s through using my personality or by making a fool of myself, I have always given my newly established listener base something to listen to; even in the unfortunate circumstance when I’m unable to make it to the studio, I will always have something prepared. That’s why I think I should be best male.
